Born in Tokyo in 1995. Shin Hanagata actively rebels against the standardized concept of the "human," which has been ruthlessly optimized by technology and capitalism. He practices "Twisting"—a physical rewiring of his own anatomical structure and sensorium to trigger existential mutation.
The core of his practice lies in the process of bodily mutation, starting with his own flesh as Patient Zero, and the subsequent construction of new "habitats." His trajectory began with Uber Existence, living as a tele-operated surrogate avatar, and still human, which displaced his vision by grafting cameras onto his body to relativize corporeal normativity. Recently, this has expanded into CHIMERIA, an autonomous zone and infrastructural habitat constructed specifically for such mutated bodies, and Ergonomic Embryo, which dismantles the human-machine binary not by using tools, but by "becoming technology" itself. Hanagata does not merely propose concepts; he propagates new bodily realities like a contagion, relativizes existing social norms, and physically executes the reconstruction of a mutated world within spatial reality.
Hanagata was awarded the New Face Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival (2022), selected for Forbes 30 Under 30 Japan (2023), and appointed as a Saison Fellow I by The Saison Foundation (2026-2028). Major presentations include the solo exhibition Technological Chimerism Zone - CHIMERIA (WHITEHOUSE Shinjuku), the performing arts festival Autumn Meteor 2025 Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre), MOT Annual (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), and Taipei Arts Festival. His practice relentlessly transgresses the borders of contemporary art, media art, and performing arts.
